Bali Handara Gate lies in north-central Bali near the Munduk region, it's located on the main road in the area, Jl Raya Singaraja-Denpasar, in front of the Handara Golf Resort. While it’s a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Ubud, it’s a quick 30 minutes from Munduk center. When you get to the Handara Gate, there is a booth at the front of the road where you will purchase your ticket. After you purchase your ticket then you will walk forward about 50 meters and join the queue to take your photo. While you may get lucky and get a short line, the queue can range between a 5 minute and 2 hour wait. Taking a photo is the main event here, since the gate is actually just the entrance to a golf course and resort.

Balinese Gate or Candi Bentar

Gate is Candi Bentar in Balinese, and Gapura in Indonesian, both have the same meaning which is split gate. The classical Javanese and Balinese gateway entrance commonly found at the entrance of religious compounds, kraton palaces, or cemeteries. It is basically a candi-like structure split perfectly in two to create a passage in the center for people to walk through. The passage is usually elevated with a flight of stairs to reach it. A candi bentar is commonly found in Java, Bali, and Lombok. Is there other famous Bandi bentar in Bali, called The Gate of Heaven that is located in Lempuyang Temple. Candi Bentar has a candi-like form but split perfectly in two to create a symmetrical image.

Characteristically has a stepped profile, which can be heavily decorated in the case of Balinese candi bentar. The two inner surfaces are always left sheer and unornamented, as if the structure has been split in two. There are two types of gates within Balinese architecture: the split gate, known as Candi Bentar, and the roofed tower gate known as paduraksa or Kori Agung. Both types of gates have specific roles in Balinese architectural design. Candi bentar is the gate used in the nista mandala, while the kori agung is employed as the gate between the madya mandala and Utama mandala inner compounds. The rules for gate types are also valid for non-religious compounds such as Puri, nobles', kings' residences and other as well as an entrance to a golf course of Bali Handara Golf & Resort which become the most iconic Bali photos.
